We switched credit card processors so we could actually talk about CBD. Our old processor wanted us to scrub the site of testimonials, disconnect from our Google reviews, scrub our social media and any mention of the benefits of CBD. My guess is that it was due to some pretty heavy lobbying from Big Pharma on the FTC. The information below will help you understand what would motivate them to do so. The Broader Context: Cannabis and the Pharmaceutical Landscape It's worth exploring the broader context of how cannabis, including CBD, intersects with the pharmaceutical industry. The growing acceptance and legalization of cannabis across U.S. states have affected the stock market. A study published by the National Institute of Health found that "Legalization of cannabis by U.S. states is likely increasing the use of cannabis [and CBD] as an alternative to conventional pharmaceutical drugs. We examined how cannabis legalization between 1996 and 2019 affected stock market returns for listed generic and brand pharmaceutical companies and found that returns were 1.5-2% lower at 10 days after legalization. Returns decreased in response to both medical and recreational legalization, for both generic and brand drugmakers. Investors anticipate a single legalization event to reduce drugmaker annual sales by $3B on average." You can find the article here: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9432746/ Another intersection of CBD with modernity is in the development of synthetic compounds. Some pharmaceutical companies are developing and patenting synthetic cannabinoids, which can be FDA-approved and controlled. For millennia, human societies have relied on a system of knowledge passed down through generations. This tradition is deeply embedded in human history—a parent teaching their offspring, who then teach theirs about the benefits of healing herbs. This ancient wisdom echoes observations of wild chimpanzees in a BBC article, which describes how they "self-medicate" with plants. An injured chimpanzee sought out and ate ferns that were later found to have potent anti-inflammatory properties, leading to his recovery.
