168. An All-In-One First Aid Plant: Plantago/Plantain.

Updated: 5 days ago

I’d like to introduce you to one of my favorite plants. Plantago or Plantain.

Most likely, you’ve been ignoring this plant despite it growing right under your feet. It appears in sidewalk cracks, along driveways, and smack in the middle of many lawns. It’s a medicinal plant that has been used for millennia across Europe, Asia, and elsewhere for wound care. And now, clinical studies back this mighty herb for speeding wound closure, helping prevent infections, reducing inflammation and bleeding.

Plantain is a common “weed” that does the work of a first‑aid shelf.

When we visited Africa, a young Maasai guide taught us about a similar plant that his tribe used for wound healing. Every child learned about this plant early in life, and they turned to it while out in the savanna tending their cattle. We've lost this tradition in the West. In this post, I'll reintroduce you.

Plantain was brought to the US by European Settlers and planted in their gardens for medicinal purposes. It is so hardy and prolific that it quickly spread and became known to Indigenous people as “White Man’s Footprint”. Wherever the settlers went, this plant appeared in the landscape. Its ability to thrive in marginal spaces speaks to its medicinal properties.

In the past, if someone had a skin wound, they would harvest fresh leaves from this plant, crush or even chew them, and apply them directly to the wound. They would experience less pain, reduced bleeding, and wounds would close neatly with minimal scarring. This practice was repeated generation after generation, with observed results experienced across cultures and centuries. Thankfully, this ancestral wisdom is still accessible.

Science helps us understand what’s happening - mucilage from the plant forms a soothing, protective gel, easing pain; allantoin stimulates new cell growth; aucubin and related plant properties have an antimicrobial effect, helping fight infectious microorganisms; and flavonoids and tannins tamp down inflammation, support tissue repair, and reduce bleeding. High levels of antioxidants and vitamin C, which are essential in promoting collagen synthesis, are also present. Modern-day laboratory and human trials have found that plantain extracts perform on par with some standard treatments for burns. In our shop, we hear so much feedback about its ability to soothe autoimmune diseases such as Eczema and Psoriasis as well.

Please don't harvest those sidewalk champions, however, they've been exposed to toxins. Our plants are ethically harvested from pristine landscapes in CT and MA. The good news is that you don't have to work that hard – our Clinical Herbalist and Former Registered Nurse has prepared an Organic remedy you can have on hand for any kind of red, dry, itchy skin, minor burns, infections of the skin, and bug bites. It’s also great for acne and neutralizing free radicals, which are a major cause of premature skin aging, so I apply our salve (below) nightly to my face.

Try our Lose the Itch Plantain Salve: is made from ethically harvested plantain and turned into a ready-to-use salve. It’s the same time-tested medicine in a clean, shelf‑stable form—handy whenever you need its benefits. Read our Google Reviews about this amazing salve or leave your own if you've already discovered its magic.
